Interregional Forum for Sustainable Healthcare - Montreal, Canada
Interregional Forum for Sustainable Healthcare - Montreal April 30th

Organized by the Synergie Santé Environnement in collaboration with the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), Accreditation Canada and the CHUM this event focuses on:
- Responsible healthcare procurement & innovations
- Climate change adaptation
- Life cycle assessment
- Health promotion
- GHG emissions reduction and more!
Our experienced, Toronto-based sustainability advisor, Shahin Hirji, was on hand to answer questions about Nocomed. Because healthcare has a carbon problem, we were particularly looking forward to:
- Tools to accelerate the ecological transition of the health care system
- Adaptation to climate change
- How pharmaceutical procurement can become more sustainable
One of the highlights of the conference was a site visit to CR CHUM Research Center.
Tools To Accelerate The Ecological Transition
As healthcare organizations seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste, strengthen preparedness for extreme events, and shift toward more preventative approaches, they need clearer data and stronger decision support. The Nocomed platform is designed to help healthcare organizations track and better understand greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, evaluate strategies to reduce emissions, and identify opportunities to integrate sustainability considerations into procurement decisions.
Amongst other sustainability aspects directly applicable to life sciences and healthcare organization, the Nocomed software helps sustainability leaders to better track, identify and reduce waste emissions with easy to understand visual presentation. Enable, empower and inspire sustainability and operations teams to reduce organic, mixed paper/card, industrial and other waste types is one part of the challenge. Another is tracking improvements which is core to actioning the right aspects and staying motivated.

Site Visit CHUM Research Center
A particular highlight was the site visit to the CRCHUM Research Center, a LEED-NC Gold certified showcase for medical research in Quebec where participants saw innovative practices in the operating room, cafeteria, and labour and delivery wards. These examples demonstrated that sustainability can be embedded directly into clinical and operational environments, not treated as disconnected initiatives. For Nocomed, this was a strong reminder that progress depends on the ability to connect sustainability goals with day-to-day clinical and practical workflows, measurable outcomes, and scalable implementation pathways across healthcare settings.
With visibility through the lifecycle, department or process, and with visibility by site, as in the example below, or by department teams can work together to improve organizational sustainability. Making visible the potential for improvement, and measuring that improvement overtime helps to maintain focus on the aspects that matter most.

Other aspects of sustainability, such as carbon emissions from utilities, various forms of transportation and more, ensure factual data through supply and value chains for a comprehensive insight into your carbon footprint. Sustainable Procurement
The forum also created opportunities to connect with innovative suppliers and professionals supporting a more sustainable healthcare sector. These conversations underscored the importance of collaboration to accelerate meaningful change. At Nocomed, we see a clear opportunity to support this transition by equipping healthcare organizations with the insights they need to measure emissions, assess reduction pathways, and strengthen sustainability-informed procurement. The momentum at the forum made it clear that the sector is ready for practical solutions that help translate ambition into action.
